Answers to common questions about planning a Lake Erie fishing trip with Captain Gary.

Does the boat have a bathroom?

Yes! Sara J’s King Cat boats have a private enclosed bathroom.

Are children and beginners welcome?

Sara J trips are great for families and first-time anglers. Ask Captain Gary about age rules, life jackets and how the crew helps beginners on your specific trip.

What if I get seasick?

The King Cat has a twin-hull design making it very stable on the water. Motion is still possible on Lake Erie, but the King Cat makes it as motion free as possible.

Do I need a fishing license?

Ask Captain Gary which fishing license is required for your departure and each angler before the trip. License rules depend on age and where you fish; check the current state requirements directly.

What happens if weather is bad?

The captain decides whether conditions allow departure. Ask for the current rescheduling, cancellation and deposit policy when booking.

Is fish cleaning available?

Captain Gary does fish cleaning on site for an extra fee. Ask whether it is available for your trip, where it happens and the current price.

What should I bring?

Sara J provides rods, reels and bait. Ask Captain Gary about clothing, food and drinks, a cooler, licenses and any items restricted onboard.

What are the terms of the fish guarantee?

Guaranteed fish or double your money back!!

Where do trips depart?

Lorain is the Sara J’s home port at 485 California Ave. Confirm the exact current port, dock and slip for your booked trip.

How much does a trip cost?

Rates start at $199 per person based on six people. Call Captain Gary for your group’s current quote.

What kind of fish can I catch on Lake Erie?

Lake Erie is known for walleye, perch and smallmouth bass. Depending on the season and trip, steelhead trout or freshwater drum may also be caught. Ask Captain Gary about the fish you want to target.

When is the best time to book a Lake Erie fishing charter?

May through October are prime season, with early summer for walleye and late summer into early fall for perch. Call Captain Gary to discuss what fish are running on your dates.

Can I keep the fish I catch?

You can keep fish that meet the applicable size and catch limits. Ask Captain Gary about taking your catch home and available cleaning services.

Do you offer private trips or shared charters?

Private trips are available for your group. Solo anglers and smaller parties can ask about shared walk-on seats and available dates.

What should I pack for a day on Lake Erie?
